Here is the problem, I have MAC OS 10.5.8 and I am trying to upgrade to 10.6.8 and when I boot off the disc, the system reads the disc and then after a few minutes it ejects the disc. Does that mean the disc is not bootable, or is there something else?
This is a forum that is maintained, monitored, and paid for by Apple. So we cannot discuss downloading a copy of 10.6.8, which would be an illegel activity, and burning it to a blank DVD. You can get a legitimate retail Snow Leopard installation disc at the online Apple Store, for only $20.
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
The Mac OS X installation disc that comes with a particular Mac model usually do not work with a differnet Mac model. So without knowing more, it may or may not be a hardware problem with the optical drive. Here is a list of all iMac models
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/index-imac.html
You should identify your iMac model from the list and provide that info. Select About This Mac from your Mac's Apple menu to get more info.
Two things to keep in mind. If the iMac is PowerPC-based (not Intel), the highest version of Mac OS X it will run is Leopard (10.5.8). 10.6.x (Snow Leopard) and later is Intel only. A Mac can run the version of Mac OS X it came with, or LATER (up to hardware limits), but (usually) NOT earlier. So, for example, if it came with 10.5.8 pre-installed, it cannot use a disc that installs 10.5.6.
You can usually start up from an external optical drive, if it supports the type of disc you put in. A 'CD drive' will not read a DVD, for example. Some DVDs are 'dual layer,' and they may not work in early DVD drives.

Aug 06, 2009 But this is just what the Mac OS X Software Updater shows, hence Apple links to a couple of Support articles for detailed information on the update, as well as on the security content of 10.5.8. He has Mac OS X version 10.5.8. When we tried to upgrade it the OS reported that there are no updates available. We googled around to find alternative ways of upgrading the system - 3-4 different clicking paths all leading to the same system update program - but with same outcome. --Dave K. - Back to my Mac no longer works after upgrading to Lion
After I upgraded my home machines to Lion, I can no longer access them from my work computer, which is running Snow Leopard. When they were both Snow leopard, it worked fine. How can I get them working again? I don't have control over the OS on my work computer. Is it necessary for me to downgrade all of my home computers to Snow leopard in order to get them talking again?
Additionally the binoculars icon appears in the menu bar all of the time. In previous versions, this would only happen when somebody connected to my machine. Could these problems be related?OK, so further investigation has addressed the BTMM issue on a remote machine.
With all machines running lion, I was having issues trying to log in to a standard user headless machine already running. In Snow Leopard, I had no issues with this since you can log in via screen sharing using an admin login that's running a standard login. Lion allows multiple accounts to be signed in which is handy since you can now run virtual sessions. This means you can admin the remote computer without bothering the remote user.
The problem was that now logging in using admin login brings up the admin account (which makes sense) instead of the desktop to the standard login. I applied a similar solution to a problem that was related to screen sharing I found on this board. What I believe to be the fix is to add the standard user to the screen sharing user list. Then screen share to the remote account using the standard user credentials.
So on the remote computer, in System Settings->Sharing->Screen Sharing, add the standard user to be allowed access. Previously I only had admins. This may not be an ideal solution for what I'm trying to do since the remote computers primary login is the standard user to be used as a common computer, but it now works so I am happy with it.
Now my only 'problem' is my AEBS complaining about my MobileMe credentials, but it doesn't appear to have an impact on BTMM performance so I'll quietly wait for a fix down the road. - I recently tried to update my iPhone 3 software via my mothers Mac book comp - during the upgrade I lost all my music and calendar dates and now the iTunes on my phone has my mothers iTunes detail - how do I get all my info back on the phone?Restore it using the computer you normally sync with.

Which version of the utility will work on my MacBook, and still control the older Airport Extreme?if I update the Airport to the latest version, and 'control' it with my MacBook Pro, will the older G4 still be able to use the signal from the new Airport?
Yes. I went to purchase tab, clicked 'download' next to the app but still nothing happens. It's not internet problem because everything else on the app store works. The only thing not working is Mavericks downloading and I don't know why. Please help.To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:
iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
Xserve (Early 2009)
Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory
8 GB or more of available space
Since Mavericks requires 8GB's or more of free disk space, control click the MacintoshHD icon on your desktop or open the Finder, right or control click startup disk in the Sidebar on the left then click Get Info.
You'll see Available and Capacity. Make sure there's at least 15% available disk space.

Yes you can, however it is A LOT easier if you make a 10.6 TimeMachine (disconnect it) and/or (best) a 10.6 Carbon Copy Cloner bootable clone. (disconnect it too)
TimeMachine drives are not bootable, so you will require your 10.6 install disk (slow) to be perfectly functional to boot and perform the ENTIRE drive erasure required to restore the 10.6 TimeMachine copy (slow) to the internal drive.
With a 10.6 bootable clone on a external drive, it's hold the option key bootable, so your up in seconds on the 10.6 clone and can be erasing the entire internal drive while surfing the web.
Also if your 10.6 disk is not working, the clone is, so it's another bootable backup.
Most commonly used backup methods
The other more complicated method to restore 10.6 on a machine that was upgraded to 10.7 or 10.8 is to extract all one's files into a neutral state on a external storage drive. (not TiThen use the 10.6 disk to wipe everything and reinstall 10.6 fresh, then programs then files.
10.7 and 10.8 changes things in the User/Library, so you can't just restore from TimeMachine backwards.
Also newer versions of programs from Apple changes their support files, like iTunes Library and iPhoto Library, so it's a lot more work extracting your original mp3's and jpg's for reimportation into 10.6 versions of those programs.
How to revert your Mac to Snow Leopard - Sorry if posted before, was unable to find anything. Is it possible to upgrade a Mac Pro 1,1 (2006) Upgrade from Dual-Core to Quad-Core (or more)? If it is, would you mind providing a bit of info on what I would need to do this.
Many thanks.Do some Google searching and visit XLR8YourMac. - i have a mac and am thinking about upgrading from snowlepard to lion , is it a good idea and hard to adapt toThis is my 'About This Mac' .. it shows I have Intel i7 CPU. If you are running SL, you at least have Intel, but would need at least Core2Duo an 2 GB (most people suggest 4 GB) RAM.
If you want to run Lion, remember that the discussions in this forum from last summer when Lion first came out (and since) were highly charged at times. Certain features that vanished or were added caused great heartache for some. Others love Lion, though. And some live with the changes waiting for any fixes they would desire.
Any PPC (PowerPC) applications you depend upon will not work under Lion. Use this page to see what applications will not run: http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
AND
Recall that you can clone your SL to an external disk to keep it safe. Then you can 'experiment with' the new OSX (Lion or ML) until you know it works for you while still having your old SL safe in case you need it.
Good luck. - I no longer have a PC or Mac. How can I upgrade to iOS 5?Your iPhone can be updated to the latest firmware in an Apple Store but you would lose all the information off your phone.
If your happy to do this, may I recommend backing up to iCloud once you are on iOS 5.1.1 and then you will be able to perform future upgrades over wifi and restore your phone from your iCloud account should you ever need to in the future.
The other option might be to back your iPhone upto a friends computer without syncing and this might be the only way you could restore everything back onto your updated phone.
Also download apps to back up your contacts online so that you can restore them also after the update.
May I suggest Contacts Backup app which enables you to back up your contacts by email, Dropbox or via USB.
Hope this helps.
